Get Medical Insurance at Any Time of Year

In the world of health insurance, there are Open Enrollment periods when anyone can get a Reno health insurance plan. For individuals and families, Open Enrollment starts on November 1st and ends on December 15th for coverage starting January 1st. For Medicare beneficiaries, the Annual Enrollment Period starts on October 15th and ends on December 7th for coverage starting January 1st. Employees who get medical insurance through their jobs will need to consult their Plan Administrator to determine when their Open Enrollment Period is.

Did you know that you can apply for coverage outside of these Open Enrollment periods without a Qualifying Life Event? Depending on your eligibility, you might be able to apply for medical insurance starting as early as next month!

Individual and Families

Outside of the Open Enrollment Period, individuals and families will need a Qualifying Life Event to enroll in coverage instantly. For those who do not have a Qualifying Life Event, they can apply for medical insurance with a 90 day waiting period. This 90 day waiting period rule only applies to Nevada residents. The 90 day waiting period allows people to get off-exchange plans only. People enrolling in subsidized insurance on-exchange cannot use the 90-day waiting period rule.

Medicare

Did you know that there is no Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare Supplement Reno plans? Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap plans, are available all year. Depending on your eligibility, you may need to answer health questions when applying. Based on your health history, the insurance carrier can approve or deny your application for medical insurance. You must also be enrolled in both Part A and Part B to get a Medigap plan.

Medicare Advantage Reno Part C plans and Part D drug plans have different enrollment rules. You cannot apply for these plans at any time during the year unless you have a Special Enrollment Period. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, also known as CMS, has very strict rules for these types of enrollments.
