Renown Health is the region’s largest, locally governed, not-for-profit healthcare provider in Northern Nevada. And their contract with Aetna insurance plans was set to expire on May 31, 2024. Luckily for the area, Aetna and Renown have recently finished negotiations to renew their agreement, continuing their partnership and providing high-quality medical care for residents in the greater Reno area.
What is a provider contract in healthcare?
A provider contract is a document that represents the business relationship between a provider and a payor. In this case, the provider is a healthcare provider, like an individual physician or an organization with multiple doctors on staff that administers healthcare services to patients. In this case, Renown is the provider.
The payor is a health insurance company that pays for the provider’s services for its enrolled members, like Aetna.
The contract outlines the details of the business relationship between the provider and the payor, ensuring that everyone is on the same page with the coverage levels and payouts.
These contracts finite and lapse over time. The provider and payer must renegotiate the terms occasionally to maintain their business relationship.
The new agreement between Aetna and Renown
As of May 10, 2024, Aetna and Renown have reached a new multi-year agreement to continue serving the Northern Nevada and California area. Aetna members can continue to enjoy in-network access for all of Renown Medical Group facilities, including primary care, specialist physicians, advanced practitioners, and urgent cares.
Aetna members also have in-network access to Renown Medical Group Hospitals:
- Renown Regional Medical Center – 1155 Mill St., Reno, NV
- Renown South Meadows Medical Center – 10101 Double R Blvd, Reno, NV
- Renown Children’s Hospital – 1155 Mill St., Reno, NV
Currently, Aetna and Renown have an agreement for commercial and individual family plans only. They do not have a Medicare relationship with Renown Health.
Network alternatives
Provider contracts are always changing. And if you find that your insurance plan no longer provides the coverage it used to under new contract terms, there are always alternate options.
For Aetna members, you can always visit their website at Aetna.com and click the “Find a doctor” tab on the top menu. That will provide a list of in-network healthcare providers in your area.
However, since Aetna and Renown have reached an agreement during their contract negotiations, Aetna members should still be able to enjoy the same level of coverage that they’re used to from their preferred Renown healthcare providers.
