Aetna Medicare Advantage Terminates Contract with UHS Hospitals in Northern Nevada

There has been a nationwide trend of hospitals dropping or renegotiating their Medicare Advantage contracts. And the latest casualty in the ever-changing landscape of health insurance is between Aetna and Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS). Here’s what you should know about Aetna Medicare Advantage terminating its contract with UHS hospitals in Northern Nevada.

Aetna and UHS: Who Are They?

Aetna is one of the largest Medicare Advantage providers in the nation. They offer several health insurance options to thousands in the Northern Nevada region.

Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS) is one of the country’s largest providers of hospital and healthcare services. They manage the healthcare facilities like hospitals, surgery centers, ERs, Urgent Cares, and more. In the Northern Nevada, area, UHS manages several major facilities, including the Northern Nevada Medical Center and Sierra Nevada Medical Center.

Contract Termination Between UHS and Aetna

Effective October 1, 2025, the contract between UHS Northern Nevada Hospitals and Aetna has been officially terminated. This means that UHS hospitals in Northern Nevada, specifically the Northern Nevada Medical Center and Sierra Nevada Medical Center hospitals, are no longer considered “in-network” for Aetna Medicare Advantage plans. This contract termination doesn’t apply to Northern Nevada Medical Group providers.

This action is part of a larger renegotiation trend across the nation. There have been several high-profile contract negotiations in the past few months between major healthcare providers and Medicare Advantage carriers — including one between Aetna and Carson Tahoe Health. Aetna also recently discontinued several Medicare Advantage plans in Northern Nevada.

Despite the official contract termination, Aetna and UHS are still in active negotiations to find a solution.
