A health insurance fraud affecting Nevadans has been going around as of July, 2024. Nevada Health Link has been informed that some consumers have received text messages from scammers pretending to be a Nevada Health plan. If you receive a suspicious text that claims your NV health plan has expired due to nonpayment, do not respond and call your insurance provider directly.
Health insurance text message fraud alert
BEWARE: There’s a new health insurance fraud affecting Nevadans going around. Scammers will send a text pretending to be a NV health plan and scam consumers out of hundreds of dollars.
The scam SMS text message reads the following:
“URGENT: Your NV Health plan expired due to nonpayment. Call (888) 279-6220 to reinstate your coverage before the deadline. Text STOP to cancel.”
Nevada Health Link’s call center has been notified that Nevadans have been receiving these fraudulent text messages and is working to eliminate the issue.
Official texts from Nevada Health Link will always include the Nevada Health Link logo and the Nevada State seal. They will also include the call center’s official phone number, 1-800-547-2927.
What to do if you receive a fraudulent text message
If you or one of your clients have received one of these messages, it’s important to contact the Nevada Health Link directly using the official call center phone number: 1-800-547-2927. From there, you can confirm your account status to make sure your account is in fact up to date.
Do not call the number listed in the text or give out any personal information, including social security number, bank account, credit card, or passwords.
Nevada Health Link will never text, call, or send a representative to your home to request information. They will also never ask for payment for customer support services. If you ever receive a message, phone call, or in-person visit that requests money for assistance, it is likely a health insurance fraud affecting Nevadans.
