Anthem Cancels Grandfathered Plans

Anthem Ends Remaining Grandfathered IFP Health Plans

Anthem Cancels Grandfathered Plans

Last year, Anthem notified all owners of Affordable Care Act plans that their Individual and Family Plans (IFP) coverage would be terminated on December 31st, 2017.  Only owners of policies whose coverage was effective prior to March 2013 (Grandfathered Plans) would continue to have coverage.  As Anthem cancels grandfathered plans, it is time to select a new health insurance Nevada policy

On September 29th owners of Grandfathered Individual and Family Health Plans (IFP) insured by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield began receiving notices. The notice stated that their health plans are being terminated on December 31, 2018.  By letter dated 9/27/18, Anthem officially notified owners of Grandfather Plans that their plans are ending at year end.

Once Anthem cancels grandfathered plans, members must pick a new plan. The plan begins January 1, 2019, so that they don’t have a gap in coverage. Anthem’s letter advises their members that Open Enrollment runs from 11/01/2018 through 12/15/2018. During that time they can shop for a new health plan. Even though their letter says “you can pick an Anthem plan”, you actually can’t, as Anthem won’t be offering Reno health insurance plans for individuals and families in Nevada in 2019.

Nevada has been losing health insurance companies for years since the Affordable Care Act became the law of the land.

In Northern Nevada, we can no longer get IFP policies from Aetna, Nevada Health Co-op, Humana One, Golden Rule, Prominence or Sierra Health and Life, and now, Anthem.  The primary reason stated by these companies for pulling out of our market is that they lose too much money.

So, what do you need to do?  You’ll need to pick a new company and plan if you want your health insurance to cover you and your family beginning January 1st.
