One Medicare Advantage plan might not be enough. Whether want to access to multiple hospital networks or stack extra benefits like dental and vision, it’s completely understandable to want to have double Medicare Advantage coverage in Nevada. But is it allowed? Unfortunately, no. But there are alternatives to get you the coverage you want. Here’s what you need to know.
CMS Rule: Only One Medicare Advantage Plan
According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), a person can only have one Medicare Advantage (MA) plan — no exceptions. If you enroll in a new MA plan, CMS will automatically unenroll you from your existing plan.
The main reason to prevent double Medicare Advantage coverage in Nevada and across the U.S. is to avoid duplicate coverage and confusion. As you likely know, there’s a lot of paperwork that comes along with Medicare coverage. If someone has multiple active plans, it’d be even more confusing to decide which plan to use for which services, leading to a longer process with higher potential for error.
The same non-double-coverage rule applies to Medicare Part D, along with having both a Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plan. You can only have one.
Alternatives to Double Medicare Advantage Coverage in Nevada
Just because you can’t have double Medicare Advantage coverage in Nevada doesn’t mean there aren’t alternatives that can give you the coverage and “extras” you want out of a Medicare plan.
If you’re looking for broader provider network access, look into PPO Medicare Advantage plans. They often have nationwide coverage that appeals to those who like to travel with more peace of mind.
If you’re looking for better dental, vision, or extra benefits, HMO plans sometimes provide stronger “extras.” Many dentists also offer in-house discount programs, which may be a better option for anyone looking for stronger dental coverage and want to stick with a broader-network Medicare Advantage plan.
Of course, benefits and networks vary by location and carrier. Some PPOs may offer stronger benefits compared to HMO plans, which is why it’s important to shop around and work with a knowledgeable local agent.

When Can You Change Medicare Advantage Plans?
Ready to expand your coverage? There are only certain times of year when you can switch your Medicare Advantage plan:
- Annual Enrollment Period: Lasts from October 15 through December 7 for coverage starting January 1.
- Open Enrollment Period: Lasts from January 1 through March 31. Coverage starts on the first of the month following application.
- Special Enrollment Period: Any time of year after a qualifying life event, like losing health coverage, moving, getting married, etc.
You can adjust your coverage during any of these windows. The key is to evaluate what matters most to you, whether it’s network access, benefits, or both. And remember, you can only pick one plan. There’s no double Medicare Advantage coverage in Nevada — or anywhere else.
