It may help to discuss your options first with a health insurance broker. You will want to have a good grasp of all your options with Medicare prior to enrolling. Many plans may only be available to you when you become initially eligible for Medicare. You can either contact our office or read up on the difference between a Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plan. Below is a brief explanation of the difference between these two plans.
Medicare Supplement
Medicare Supplement plans fill in the 20% coverage gap that Original Medicare doesn’t cover. Parts A and B from the government only cover 80% of your hospital and doctor expenses. Most Supplement plans have very low yearly out of pocket expenses for members. These plans also cover a large majority of physicians that accept Medicare in the nation. Most traditional insurance plans will only cover doctors in your state so this is a great benefit.
Supplement plans do not cover prescription drugs. You will need to enroll in a separate drug plan to protect you from prescription expenses. Our prescription drug plan page has some great information on how to obtain one of these plans.
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage plans are another option to give you coverage while you are on Medicare. These plans tend to have very low monthly premiums and are often $0. In addition, these plans also often include dental, vision, or hearing aid coverage along with prescription drug plans. Medicare describes these plans as an all in one package because they provide coverage for many other services besides just hospitals and doctors.
These plans do have only certain doctors that you can choose from. If you plan to sign up for Anthem Medicare plans online, you should check to make sure your current doctor accepts the plan.
