When to Apply for Coverage

Most people sign up for Medicare coverage when they are initially eligible for Part A and Part B of Medicare. The federal government recommends looking at Medicare plans and starting the process 3 months prior to the 65th birthday. Some aspects of the initial eligibility are handled by the Social Security Administration. Medicare Advantage plans, Part D drug plans, and Medicare Supplement plans are purchased directly through private insurance companies.
